From the Coach.......
Before I go any further I have a massive apology to send out to Andy Viggars whom I neglected to put on the details for the inter county gala at Sheffield. Andy went along, duly dragging his parents away from their weekend break, to compete in the 100 Breast stroke – doing a fantastic job and coming home in a 1.14.69 so he is now well and truly faster than his brother.

Speedo Round 3 - Final here we come, what a way to finish this year!

Well what can I say, nothing honestly words will not be enough to say what an amazing night. You were all fantastic the team spirit, behaviour

and swimming was just impeccable. Trophy was collected by our club Captain Becky Heal and able assisted by our stand in Adam Rumney due to Andy having other commitments – hopefully he will be with us on January 14 2007

You were amazing and I think you only have to look at the list of pb’s it speaks volumes.

I just want to say thank you for being so wonderful and making it such a brilliant night, I can’t tell you how proud of you all I am and want you all to know that you never cease to amaze. You deserve that trophy and doesn’t it look good in our cabinet!

So please stay well and train hard,  we have to be ready for January 14 2007!

Speedo Round 3 - what a result!
So we didn't need Duncan after all, final results were:-

Market Drayton 216
Boldmere B 200
Etwall Eagles 195
Oakengates 188
Burntwood 151
Treonte Long Eaton 105

In the end a reasonably comfortable Gala win, our third in a row. More importantly it means that not only did we win the West Midlands Division 3 North League, we also qualify for a swim off against the Division 3 South winners at Stechford on January 14th 2007.

Girls Captain Rebecca Heal and Adam Rumney receiving the inaugural Cup and Pennant on behalf of the MDSC team from the West Midlands Speedo League Treasurer, Monica Brown.

Now on display in our trophy cabinet at the Swimming Pool.

Here are most of the swimmers from the team for the third round (Izzy, George, Zoe & Sophie where were you hiding?) - but of course there are several other swimmers who were in the previous two successful teams. Well done to all the swimmers that have taken part.

Latest Mens Open swimmer for MDSC?

Unfortunately Duncan Goodhew hasn't agreed to swim the Open events for us in the next Speedo gala.

Duncan was at Market Drayton Pool on behalf of Swimathon, an event he created over 21 years ago and supported last year by several MDSC swimmers including Daniel & Emma Scriven, Holly Guy and Rachael Kelly.

However, before leaving he managed a brief coaching session where he passed on technique and stroke tips to the swimmers - apparently Daniel has a good Breaststroke leg action, coming from a 100m Breaststroke Oylmpic Gold Medalist that can't be bad!

See Gallery for more pictures.

Update - 29th November 2006
Pictures from Wrexham added to Photogallery and Speed Awards updated.

Wilkinson's in Market Drayton have kindly donated £500 to the Club - Pictured below is our Chairman receiving the Cheque along with as many swimmers as could make the sprint from School to the Store last Friday.

HSBC 5th Junior Sprint Meet – Saturday 18th November 2006 at Wrexham Waterworld
Coaches report:

Thank you to all who made it to Wrexham on Saturday - Parents, Grandparents, siblings and most of all the swimmers.  We had a super days' swimming, out of 56 events we had swimmers entered in 47 of them gaining 53 pbs.  Jack Booth managed to knock an impressive 12 seconds off his 50m fly time, Phoebe Tustin took 6 seconds off her 25m front crawl after finding a pair of goggles to fit!

Several of the swimmers made their open gala debuts: Sophie Heathcote, Anna and Katy Aylward, Jack Booth, Catriona Jones and Alfie Thomas) they all swam very impressively and with no sign of nerves.  10 made it into the medal table some going up several times (Jessica Brereton, Jessica Rumney, Charlie Thomas, Richard Grindrod, Joshua Brereton, Tom Plows, Daniel Scriven, Emma Scriven, Alfie Thomas and Issy Lester).

Finally Daniel Scriven having been pipped for first place in the heats for the age 12 boys 50m breast by 100th second decided Wrexham needed a demonstration on how breast stroke should be swam and went on to win the final leading the other swimmers by a clear 2m and took the gold in a new meet record time of 38.40.

Thank you too all for an enjoyable and very rewarding day.

Judith Lester

Newsletter from the Head Coach
Hi everyone

As normal I have a little bit of catching up to do so here goes, what a strange couple of weekends we have had!

The Inter County gala at Sheffield on October 22nd - Rachael & Ian went along to represent Shropshire along with George and James. Rachael came back with a 1.02.80 for 100 free style and just missed her national. Ian broke that sub min at long last with a brilliant 59.97.  All times have gone to the Webmaster for up dating – sorry I don’t have the times to publish

Closely followed by MIDLAND LONG COURSE MEET November 4 & 5 2006

We went with 4 qualifiers, who all produced fantastic swims; we came away with a brilliant start to the new season.

Rachael, who as per normal excelled, tantalising us with being 1st reserve finalist again for 100 fly, went on to the 50 Fly final finished 4th in the race and 2nd overall in the age group bringing home a medal

Ian who has been under the weather for a while now and was so nervous, enough for everyone had a sterling swim in his 800.

Alex who again was struggling but held his own exceptionally well against the demon! And last but not least Courtney who came and went in a flash swam just outside her pb.

Well what can I say, you were all amazing and the team spirit was fantastic, a massive thank you to Thomas Deakin for turning up literally at the very last second and helping us save the day.

I can’t thank you all enough for the superb swimming, and cheerleading at the back! I can honestly say that since the Counties I have never been so hoarse, nervous, thrilled and amazed at what you, as a team and as individuals, can do to win our first ever Speedo. It was just tremendous,  and goodness knows where it will take us next round - and a rematch is a massive possibility.

A huge thank you to Rachel for her brilliant swimming and team work in the relays, she is going to be sadly missed when she goes off on her travels shortly. As an integral part of our squad she will be a hard act to follow - the whole squad wishes you a safe and enjoyable trip (and a speedy return for next Season?).

We have picked up a whooping 22 pb’s, some people not content with one but two on the night – I am sorry if I have missed some of the splits I am ever hopeful that David maybe able to retrieve them of the electronics, I failed miserably trying to collect all the splits with so much going on around.

Perry Beeches and Sutton Swim Squad Gala - 10th  September 2006
This gala was a chance for some of the younger swimmers to compete in their first open meet, and for some it was their first gala altogether.

We had a squad of 9 attending, Jack Booth, Richard Grindrod, Naomi Gulliver, Izzy Lester, Daniel Scriven, Emma Scriven, Phoebe Tustin, Henry Wright and Rose Wright, who all did extremely well with every swimmer gaining pb`s, Notably Jack Booth getting 2 14 second pb`s in his first gala- well done .We had a total of 27 pb`s for the 9 swimmers.

Rachael Swims at Nationals

What can I say, this was a super trip and I truly don’t know who was more nervous, Mum & Dad, Courtney Rachael or me.

The whole trip was an experience, and most enjoyable, thank you to Tim and Carole for making it more than pleasant even though we took enough stuff for a week!

Rachael – although inwardly very nervous – was calm and quiet – very rare I know! She took everything in her stride. The race, Rach was a little slow to start but from a slow turn she swam a solid fast 2nd length and pulled off a fantastic 3rd place finish.

Overall Rachael came 28th out of over 60 swimmers she was 11th fastest in her age group and 1st reserve finalist. Finishing time was 1.10.06 which converts out to a 1.09.00 in the 25m pool

Well done Rachael and thank you for sticking with it, see now you know why I nag you so much!!!!!!

PS that hat, well it’s blue - sorry

Training at Wrekin now 6-8pm on a Sunday

Some of last week's Wrekin session swimmers

Rachael's gone National

A massive well done to Rachael who has now become MDSC’s first National Qualifier

Times gained at the Stockport inter county gala, thrown into the under 14’s and open, Rachael swam 50, 100 and 200 Fly (all in a 50 meter pool!!!)

50 Fly 32.04 (50) converts to 31.40 (25)

100 fly 1.11.13 (50) converts to 1.10.10 (25)

200 Fly 2.46.85 (50) converts to 2.44.90 (25)

Not only did she go national but also pulled in a 200 fly midland qualifying time to boot – so I have to change my sheet again - can’t tell you how proud and pleased for you we all are, you are now officially the fastest female flyer in the squad so you know what that means!!! Well done Rach you are now splashed all over the website.

Unfortunately Charlie was unable to have another go at his 400 freestyle due to injury, but hopefully he will be better for the Wrexham meet.

This was a really excellent meet for all those who went, achieving some fantastic results.

Well done to Ian who has gained the equivalent to his midlands, and although he is too late for this years youth midlands event, he now knows next year will be easy……..

Nikki who worked her socks off for that 400 IM time, she took that race by the scruff of the neck and came away with the biggest smile I have seen this year and she deserves it, after all the IM training I have put her through.

Courtney who is in shock, said she wanted to skip the 1.06 bit, well she certainly did as she has now moved herself well and truly in to the 1.05’s, I don’t think it really hit her until she got home but, yep Coventry here you come.

A fantastic effort by Alex, who not only took 12 seconds off his 400 free, but finished 5th over all and swam himself into the 400 final. He held his own, finishing 5th, piping Laurence Hickin by a finger nail to grab that place.

Richard swam exceptionally well, he held his own and has moved much closer to gaining his midlands time, coming away with 3 excellent pb’s, and another chance at Haydn Hill, so good luck Richard

Very strange and restrained for me, I had to remain in the stands, no coaches allowed on poolside feeling very much lost, I was one very quiet coach considering!!!!!! Thank you to everyone one who ferried me back and forth, and put up with me champing at the bit to “get down there” and making this the best Easter present in a long time, and hey no calories.
