Club Championships 2008 - Saturday evening saw the final gala of five taking place at the pool in Market Drayton. This year club championships have been a huge success and swimmers have totalled a massive 354 medals between 49 athletes! There were 177 gold, 84 silver, 48 bronze and 45 copper medals being achieved. These will be presented to swimmers at the Presentation evening being held on 10th January 2009.
During the championships there were 29 club records broken (and 6 set for the first time) with Caroline Saxon breaking 9 and James Wilson 8, Tom Plows close behind them with 4. Katie Deakin broke the 10 year old girls record for 200 back, Jamie Beebee the boys 14 yr old 200IM and 800 free, Richard Grindrod the boys 14 yr old 800 free, Jodie Garner-Jones the girls 15 yr old 200IM, Dan Scriven the boys 15 yr old 100 breast, Rob Wenlock boys 15 yr old 400 free and Emma Bundy the girls 16 yr old 50m breast.

The full results can be found here, PB tables will get updated over the next few weeks.

Thank you very much to all those parents and family members who helped out during the five galas, without this help we would not be able to run these events for the swimmers. A great deal of work goes on in the background in order for the evenings to run smoothly and without the commitment of the committee and volunteers we would be stuck.

Chase Roebuck Open 5th/6th. November
This Gala was well attended by Market Drayton Swimmers. Richard  Grindrod, Emma Scriven, Dan Scriven, Jamie Beebee, Emma Bundy, Katie Deakin and Rebecca Deakin. Also swimming with Market Drayton were Annabel and James Cook. It was a pleasure to lead the Cook's on poolside again and sad that they are moving to pastures new.

Most swimmers PB'd at an event over the two days.  Highlights on the first day were Dan's silver Medals for second place in the 200BR and 100Back, Emma Bundy's 4th place in the 400 Free and Richards continuing efforts to 'fleece' his parents, as it transpired that he was getting a monetary award per second of each PB and with 23 seconds knocked off his PBs it must have cost them dearly!  Well done also to the Deakins who were swimming in their very first open.

The second day was more of the same, lots of PBs and a few more  medals. Gold for Dan in the 100BR, Bronze for James C in the 200 FLY, Silver for Jamie  in the same event, and a magnificent Gold medal for Jamie in the 400IM In the last event for our swimmers - the 200 Back- Dan secured another well deserved silver. It was an honour for me to attend the meet with the very talented swimmers, thank you guys. Kevin

MDSC did well and had swimmers in the final top 2 of several age groups.  The final age group placing were as follows:

Top Boy 17 and over – Ian Martin, 2nd in 16yr Girls – Caroline Saxon, 2nd in 15yr Boys – James Wilson, 2nd in 14 yr Boys – Dan Scriven, Top Boy in 13yr old – Jaime Beebee and 2nd Tom Plows, 2nd in 9yr old Boys – Alfie Thomas.

North Shropshire East Junior Schools Gala
Well done to all of those club swimmers who took part in the North Shropshire East Junior Schools Gala held at Market Drayton pool on Friday 20th June. Megan Costelloe, Katie Nagington, Emma Scriven, Phoebe Tustin, Hannah Lever, Charlotte Chapman and Toby Cordova all put in impressive swims. Toby came 2nd in the boys 25m fly final with a time of 25.35 and he came 3rd in the boys 25m breast final with a time of 25.84. Emma Scriven was 1st in the girls 25m back final with a time of 18.78 (a new meet record) and 2nd in the girls 25m breast final with a time of 20.63 (would have been a new meet record but was superseded by the 1st place swimmer). Both Toby and Emma have been selected to swim for the North Shropshire East team at the gala being held in Shrewsbury next month - well done to everyone who took part.

Midlands Age Group Championships 2008 14th & 15th June.
Tom Plows was the first up to swim in the second weekend of the Championships. His first event being the 400IM. Tom put in a solid performance finishing with 5:32:73 (conv 5:27:43). Next to swim was Daniel Scriven in his best event the 100BR. Dan put in a great performance with a terrific 3rd place Medal and PB in a time of 1:16:02 (conv 1:14:32). Great swim Dan.

James Cook swam a good 200BK with a time of 3:11:56 (conv 3:09:86). Emma Scriven's next swim was the 200IM finishing with a time of 3:19:42 (conv 3:17:42). Jamie Beebee and Tom Plows again went 'head to head' in the 200 Free. Great race again with Tom just pippin Jamie this time to the finish. Tom finishing with a time of 2:20:36 (conv 2:17:96) and Jamie 2:20:75 (conv 2:18:35) both times just outside their PB's.

Emma Scriven was back in the water again in the 100Free. Emma although understandably tiring at this point put in a great swim with a new PB of 1:22:33 (conv 1:21:33). Well done Emma.

In the last afternoon session James Cook swam a PB in the 100 Free in a time of 1:17:50 (conv 1:16:40). In the very last swim for Market Drayton the 400 Free it was again that 'star' Emma Scriven. Emma swam in a time of 5:53:22 (conv 5:49:22). This was outside Emma's PB but to me to qualify and compete at this distance in a 50M pool at just 10yrs old was again a great achievement.

The championships were a great success for Market Drayton. Drayton had more swimmers in more events than most of our local clubs. Also it should be noted that we appear to have had a PB in every 100M event we swam! This is something the swimmers can be proud of. With a little more pool time and some extra hard training in the future I hope we can be more successful over the longer distances next year.

Well Done. Kevin.

PB's have been updated - 12 June 2008

Congratulations to the following swimmers who have achieved their Preliminary and Competitive Start Awards - Kathryn Jones, Alice Plows, Shona Duncan, Rebecca Deakin, Francis Derricutt, Matthew Poultney, Annabel Cook, James Cook, Freya Wright, Holly Guy, Edward Saxon, Joshua Poultney.

Time Trials results from 12th June - See the notice board or click here

Midland 2008 Age Group Championships - 7th/8th June Coventry.
Well done to the swimmers who qualified and entered the first weekend of the Championships at Coventry. First to swim was Emma Scriven in the 200Free. Emma put in a great swim just outside her PB with 2:47:59 (conv 2:45:59). Next to swim was Jamie Beebee in the 1500M who found this a tough swim finishing outside his pb, but well done for qualifying and having a go. On the second day James Cook put in a great swim for the 200 Free finishing 2:53:85 (conv 2:51:95). James also swam the 100BK shortly after with a cracking pb of 1:30:54 (conv 1:29:64). Later in the day Emma Scriven put in a huge brave effort in the 400IM finishing 12th with a time of 7:04:76 (conv 7:00:66). Next up was Jamie Beebee and Rob Wenlock in the 100 Free. Jamie got a great pb of 1:03:35 (conv 1:02:15) followed by Rob also with a PB of 1:00:60 (conv 0:59:20).

Well done again and thanks for contributing to another successful event for Market Drayton.

Counties and the 50m & 100m events - we have just been informed that these will now be run on Sunday July 6th, however any withdrawals have to be submitted by 1st June. You will only be entitled to repayment of your Counties entry fees for these events if you withdraw.

Therefore you will remain entered UNLESS YOU either tick the withdrawal list on the notice board OR let Debbie Grindrod know directly by the 30th May. Emails can be sent to her via the webmaster.

Apologies for the short notice but the club was only informed by County on the 23rd May.

Open Water Race - Congratulations to Caroline Saxon who took part in the senior 4k race at Colwick Park, Notts and regained her trophy for the 3rd consecutive year. There were 30 senior competitors, both males and females setting off together in a water temperature of 15 degrees. It was certainly very bracing and Caroline had a slightly blue tinge around the edge when she finished!

The course consisted of 4 circuits around the lake, marked out by buoys that have to be carefully negotiated, and the technique of swimming outdoors needs to be heavily reliant upon brute force whilst ignoring the smooth streamlined frontcrawl needed in a pool. Caroline was concerned she was not fit enough to swim a fast pace over the distance but surprised herself by beating not only the women but the men as well, achieving a time of 51 minutes.

Shropshire County Secondary School Gala - Wednesday 14th May 2008.
The annual secondary schools gala took place on 14th May at MD pool and the following 9 club swimmers swam representing their own school: James Wilson, Richard Grindrod, Daniel Scriven, Charlie Thomas, Tom Bull, Jamie Beebee, Craig Judd, Emma Bundy and Nic Martin. Swimmers had a great night with several of them coming home with Bronze, Silver and Gold medals. All those swimmers who came 2nd or 1st were also invited to swim at the Three Counties Championships on Sat 28th June being held at Thomas Telford Pool. Well done everyone!

Haden Hill
Market Drayton had 11 swimmers attending the meet. Alfie Thomas, Annabel Cook, Charlie Thomas, Daniel Scriven, Emma Bundy, James Cook, Jamie Beebee, Richard Grindrod, Rob Wenlock, James Wilson and Tom Plows entered over 45 individual events between them. Great performances and near misses of MDQ Times continued throughout the day. We had new MDQTs for James Cook, Tom Plows and Rob Wenlock. We also had a stack of HH crystal first, second and third place trophies. We also had particularly great swims from Annabel Cook in the 200BR and Charlie in the 200FLY. It was a hugely successful and enjoyable meet. The new qualifiers can now look forwards to joining us at the Age Group Champs in a few weeks time. Well done all.

Midland 2008 Youth Championships
Well done to the four Swimmers who qualified for this years championships. Caroline Saxon and James Wilson competed on the Saturday. Caroline swam the 200FC with a time of 2:22:67 LC. Later in the day Caroline qualified with a heat time of 29.98 for the 50FC Final and came in 8th with a time of 30.56LC. James made the final of the 100BK and came 5th with a time of 1:04:50. James came 12th overall in the 100FC with a time of 56.85 and narrowly missed the final of the 50Fly with a time of 28:90.

On day two, Emma Bundy and Ian Martin joined the team. Caroline swam the 400FC with a time of 4:53:76LC and the 100FC with 1:06:91LC. With a great effort Caroline who had never swam at Midlands level with anything other than FC previously qualified for the 400IM final! Caroline finished with a time of 5:48:33 in the final. James again was on good form making the 50BC final with a heat time of 29.46LC going slightly slower in the final but securing third place. James was reserve finalist in the 50FC with a time of 26.57LC and also did well in the 100FLY with a time of 1:04:30LC. Both Emma and Ian put in great swims. Emma swam the 100FC with a time of 108:54LC and Ian with a good swim in the 200FC with a time of 2:11:26LC.

It was a long weekend with some of the swimmers also training at Wrekin later in the day whilst James and Caroline stayed for the finals.

Well done to the four of you.

Thanks Kevin.

New Hoodies have arrived!

Brief report on Crusader - 26 April
Well done and thank you to all the swimmers, helpers and officials (especially Mrs Rumney for stepping in as 'our' Judge at the last minute) who attended the Crusader gala at Dane Valley. With our 9yr olds at the lower end of their age group and having to support the gaps in the 12U age group points were again scarce. However, with some great relay attempts -a few DQ's - I am certain the younger teams we will be better placed in the future. We eventually came last in the gala. There were still great personal performances with an incredibly 18 PB's. Check web site for updated PB tables to follow. Special well done to Rob Wenlock who ploughed through the 1 min Barrier with 59.13 in the 100Free. If we continue to improve we will do well in our home Crusader gala and the Speedo rounds later in the year. Thanks all.

New Open swimmer to join the club?
Daniel Scriven with Richard and Ian at the 9th FINA Short Course Championships... and Mark Foster just after his 50m Butterfly final.

They had gone for the afternoon session on the 4th day as part of Daniel's Birthday - a great end to a great days racing.

Justin did try to sign him up for the next Crusader at Dane Valley in a couple of weeks, but the lure of his home base in Florida was just too great!

April 5th was a busy day!
Shrewsbury Open Report
This Gala was well attended by Drayton swimmers despite clashing with the Crusader meet later that Evening. What a line up from Drayton in the first event the 200Free! Daniel Scriven came first in age group, Jamie Beebee 2nd place with another MDQT after a great battle with Tom Plows securing third. With Rich and Charlie also in the same heat, 4 out of the 6 swimmers in the line up were from Drayton. The Day continued with Caroline Saxon, James Cook, James Wilson and Jamie Beebee, achieving a total of 7 MDQT’s! We also had fifteen Golds, 11 silver and 4 Bronze medals. A huge well done to all that attended: Dan Scriven, Charlie Thomas, Jamie Beebee, Annabelle Cook, Caroline Saxon, Emma Scriven, Emma Bundy, Tom Plows, Richard Grindrod, James Cook and James Wilson. A final mention has to go to James Wilson who achieved his NQT in the 100Back with a magnificent time of 1:00:27. Congratulations James from all at Market Drayton Swimming club.

Crusader League Report
After an exhausting session at the Shrewsbury Open gala many swimmers then travelled on to the Crusader league at Biddulph. Thanks to all those involved and helpers that transported the swimmers to attend both meets. Although we had around 11 pbs and some great personal swims we unfortunately came last in the gala. The events earlier in the day and the lack of swimmers in some age groups inevitably took their toll. I don’t want to dwell on what went wrong as all concerned did their absolute best. A special thanks to Sophie Heathcote, Hannah Lever, Shona Duncan and Michael Davis who all helped out at the last moment. As we progress to next seasons Speedo etc I am sure we will have more success with the Speedo and Crusader leagues.

National Qualifying time - Congratulations to James Wilson on getting his NQT in the 100m Backstroke at the Shrewsbury meet.

More MDQTs - Congratulations to Emma Scriven on getting her 4th MDQT in the 400IM at the City of Birmingham Meet on Good Friday followed by James Cook getting his first MDQT in the 200 Backstroke and Jamie Beebee getting his 3rd in the 200 freestyle at the Shrewsbury meet.

County Age group Report Week 1 16/17th Feb 08
What a start by Mkt Drayton! Through fear of missing any one out I will only give a short summary, watch out for medals and PB tallies as we progress.

Saturday saw 4 medals by Drayton swimmers in event 1 the 100M breaststroke! Well done to Dan on his Gold and new pb 1:14:60. Emma B came fourth in her age group event 2, 100 Backstroke. Four further medals in event 3 the 200M IM. In event 4, 200M Free, we watched Emma Scriven achieve her MDQT with a time of 2:44:65 and Caroline Saxon with 2:16.44. Later in the day we saw Caroline Saxon reach the Backstroke final.

The 800s were spectacular from the numbers of Drayton swimmers having a go at this event, well done to all that entered. Event 8 100M Backstroke saw good performances by Charlie, Tom, Rich & Dan. Gold for Caroline in the 100FLY event 9, Harry, Edward and Alfie coming in 4th 5th & 6th in the 200 Breast. Another 4 medals in Event 10 200 Free including Gold for Dan. Bronze for Caroline in the 200 Breaststroke. More medals in the 200 FLY including Gold for Charlie.

For me, the highlight has been the results in the longer distance events, in particular Nikki, Caroline and Emma B all achieving medals in the girls1500M and Craig Dan and Ian in the boys 1500M event. Thanks all for a stunning weekend.

The weekend was also very successful for our associate members James Wilson, Rob Wenlock and Jamie Beebee well done to them and their respective coaches. I look forward to week 2, see you there!

Can we please ask that all those swimmers who received a trophy at club presentation evening now return your engraved cup/shield to the committee so that it can be placed back into the trophy cabinet. Many thanks.

Club target meets
The Club is going to target the Shrewsbury open on Sat 5th April - this will be a great 'Last chance' qualifier for both Age group and Youth swimmers. The Haden Hill Gala on 11th May has also been selected though this will only be within the qualification window for the Age group swimmers. We hope as many swimmers as possible will enter these two galas.

Congratulations to Daniel Scriven who has been selected to swim for the County on 10th February. Dave Burford, who has been covering the County Coach role for the last several months, would like to thank all the MDSC swimmers that have swum for him during this time.

Training Sessions Cancelled - see Diary panel on left hand side or Notice Board for details.

Crusader League Round 1 -  19/1/08
A very big well done and thank you to all the swimmers, time keepers and team coaches on Saturday at Biddulph.  We had 5 straight wins and 6 2nd places. A staggering 19 PBs were achieved. However, with a large shortfall of swimmers in the club in the 11/12 Boys and 13/14 Girls age groups things were very tough.  We now need to focus on our turns as we had 3 DQs at this gala.  We look forward to the next round -again at Biddulph -  on 5th April.

PBs have been verified and were as follows: Jamie Rogers 100IM 1.22.84, James Wilson 100IM 1.05.57, Emma Scriven 50fly 44.24, Alfie Thomas 50fly 48.65, Caroline Saxon 100back 1.13.10, Emma Scriven 50Breast 49.01, Harry Riley 50breast 54.35, Jodie Garner-Jones 50Free 31.15, Rob Wenlock 50free 28.29, Emma Davies 50breast 50.10, Caroline Saxon 100free 1.02.83, Katie Deakin 50free 44.46, Joshua Poultney 50free 43.60, Tom Plows 50fly 33.87, Rebecca Deakin 50back Jodie Garner Jones 50fly 35.03, 57.85, Edward Saxon 50back 49.59, Tom Deakin 50free 43.02, Caroline Saxon 100fly 1.10.82.
